Robert E. Lee himself refused to wear his confederate uniform after the confederacy’s defeat in the American civil war. At his funeral he was not buried in it and no one in attendance was permitted to wear theirs either. He also declared that his confederate battle flag (what we now call “the confederate flag”) never be raised again and that it was a flag of treason.
So there’s your “southern heritage.”
Not Just Robert E Lee, which you can read here.
but Also the President of the South, Jefferson Davis felt the same way.
Basically, “Get the fuck over it.” We lost, we’re a part of this country, this flag signifies an old identity. Cut that shit out and move on.
And Robert E. Lee’s decedents are also calling for the statue to come down

Superb.
Episode one talks, among other things, about the 1984-ish nature of The US government in the 1950s. Documented and dramatized is McCarthy’s targeting of homosexuals, when he didn’t get everything he wanted out of his persecution of citizens for “thought crimes”. It details the illegal entrapment methods used by police departments, and colluded with by the courts. This had effects at the highest levels of power in Washington DC, ending in a tragedy that I had never heard of before. The event was covered up at the time. When in 2016 the family requested the justice department finally open an investigation, it was swept under the rug again.

I’m watching episode two right now.
The second episode talks, among other things, on how the Homophile movement of the 50s and 60s modeled itself on the Civil Rights Movement. One commenter though, makes what I think is an error in referring to the Civil Rights movement as the first organized liberation movement. The Suffragettes would would have been surprised to learn they weren’t organized.

My new favorite advice:
“…to help communities bring together local, state, and federal resources to directly serve veterans involved in the justice system due to mental health disorders, trauma, and substance use. In doing so, we keep veterans out of jail and prison—preventing the loss of one of our nation’s greatest assets to our families and communities—and connect them with the benefits and treatment they have earned, all while saving tax dollars for the American public.”
